Collagen in milk? The unlikely combo’s many benefits

It is beneficial to have collagen in milk because the nutrient plays a big role in bone, muscle and joint strength.

MANILA, Philippines — When we say collagen, we immediately think of a beauty supplement to have supple skin and strong hair. But what we don’t realize is that collagen is actually one of the hardest-working nutrients in our body.

“Collagen is a long-chain amino acid composed of individual amino acids Glycine, Proline, Hydroxyproline and Arginine. In nature, it is found exclusively in animal tissue, especially bones and connective tissue. It is what is responsible for giving skin elasticity, hair its strength and connective tissue its ability to hold everything in place,” registered nutritionist-dietitian Jemimah David tells Philstar.com.

David, who is the section manager of the Weight Intervention and Nutrition Services at St. Luke’s Medical Center-Global City, adds that collagen is the most abundant protein in the body, making up 30 percent of the total body protein and 70 percent of total skin protein.

How then does collagen function as protein? David explains, “Collagen creates the organic, or ‘living,’ part of your bone matrix, the inner bone, and keeps it ‘knit’ together strongly.”

Jo Ann Marie Verdadero-Salamat, seasoned RND, for her part describes the role of collagen to muscles and joints: “Collagen is a type of protein whose main function is to make the muscular fibers ductile and really firm. If we lack collagen, our muscles won’t be that strong. Our joints, especially the tendons and ligaments, are also made of protein so collagen is essential to keep them healthy.

She adds, “Collagen is immensely needed to form the structure, strength and flexibility of our bones, muscles and joints. Beauty and anti-aging are effects of collagen’s function in skin elasticity.”

Newest and improved formula

Understanding the importance of collagen, adult milk brand Anlene has come up with a new and improved formula featuring Movemax, a unique combination of nutrients essential to care for our bones, joints and muscles. It now has collagen and is still high in calcium and protein, with vitamins B2, B6, B12, C, D, E, Magnesium, and Zinc.

“It is beneficial to have collagen in milk product since this nutrient, as the Florida researchers learned, also plays a big role in keeping your bones strong,” David shares. “Of the 16 types of collagen working in our body, types 1 and 3 work together to strengthen and give support to our bones, ligaments, tendons, skin, teeth, hair, nails, eyes, etc. And taken with calcium and Vitamin D, or having it in milk really helps boost bone density.”

Verdadero-Salamat further notes, “We discovered that in order to have muscular strength, calcium is not enough. There has to be more than that so that total mobility will be achieved. In doing so, we have to pay attention to muscular fibers. Collagen is really needed to make it compact and dense.”

“This is the reason why Fonterra (the maker of Anlene) decided to really come out with a milk product that is superior when it comes to adult nutrition,” tells Verdadero-Salamat who serves as the head nutritionist of the dairy company.

Doing more and being more

For adults who are keeping up with life’s demands—from their families, professions and even personal hobbies—it is important to keep their bodies healthy and strong particularly their bones, muscles and joints.

The three, according to Verdadero-Salamat, play important roles in mobility. “As you know, the human body’s main framework is the skeletal system, which is closely knitted to the muscular system. The bones move as the muscles contract.”

Thus, the need to nourish bones, muscles and joints, and one effective way is by drinking the right adult milk.

“Anlene is a high-calcium milk, which now contains collagen. It also has B Complex, Vitamins C, D, E, and important minerals Magnesium and Zinc, which according to the latest studies are important for bone health. Anlene is also high in protein, which is important for muscular and joint strength,” explains Verdadero-Salamat. “All these are found in Anlene Movemax, meaning you can move to the maximum capacity that you can.”

As for David, she notes, “Adults need to know that milk is the best source of nutrients to maintain or improve integrity of bones, muscles and joint.”

Imagine being a mother of two while running your own restaurant, or a 50-something bachelor who finishes a triathlon. The possibilities of living life to the fullest are endless with Anlene Movemax.

Anlene with MoveMax can be enjoyed anytime of the day with its powdered milk and ready-to-drink format. So do more and be more. #AnleneMorethanMilk #WeAreMore
