Trapeze flying: A different kind of high

REAL SPORTS SCENE - Anthony Suntay - The Philippine Star

Here’s something the entire family can now try!

Flying Trapeze Philippines (FTP) is the first and only flying trapeze school in the country and it’s now open to the public! Located in Bonifacio Global City (behind the soccer turf) on the corner of 34th Street and 9th Avenue, FTP is one of the crown jewels of Ayala’s new Active Zone and will be offering an experience not found anywhere else in the country.

The full-size flying trapeze rig in the Philippines and one of only a few in all of Asia, measures 32ft high by 12ft wide, and offers everyone the chance to fly through the air with the greatest of ease. It’s founder, William Hsu, has been flying since the age of eight.

In addition to the thrill of soaring weightless through the air, the sport of flying on the trapeze has long been proven to be a great fitness routine that tones all of the body’s muscles from head to toe.

More than that, flying trapeze teaches students how to control their bodies and improve their reflexes, expecially when making a catch in mid-air. These two aspects of the trapeze combine to provide students with a challenging workout in a fun and exciting environment.

Since flying trapeze schools have opened around the world, their popularity has been on the rise. Celebrities like Hugh Jackman and musician Pink have joined the act, each citing it as an alternative to lifting weights. Pink even went so far as to incorporate her trapeze training in her 2009 MTV Video Music Awards performance and then again at the 2010 Grammy Awards show.

“I was overwhelmed with the turnout for the launch despite the sporadic rains. I truly believe that Filipinos will love flying and will find it both fun yet challenging. It’s a great workout for men and women of all ages and sizes looking to mix up their workout routines. No experience is necessary so all I can say is give it a try!”, says Hsu.

There is something for everyone at FTP, classes for those who want the full experience of learning how to fly and new tricks after they have mastered the basics as well as the opportunity to take just one swing during the daily open swing sessions.

FTP holds numerous classes six days a week and each class only has 10 students so that everyone who comes will be able to fully participate.

Let’s all experience flying!
