Workers to get extra pay on Nov. 16

MANILA, Philippines –  Workers who report for work on Tuesday are entitled to double their daily pay, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said yesterday.

Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said Nov. 16 has been declared a national holiday in observance of Eid’l Adha or the Feast of Sacrifice among Muslims.

Baldoz explained that since Eid’l Adha will be observed as a regular holiday, workers who report for work are therefore entitled to extra pay.

Under the law, Baldoz said, those who would render service on Tuesday are entitled to 200 percent of his or her basic wage for the first eight hours and, for work in excess of the 8 hours, to an additional 30 percent of his or her hourly rate on the said day.

Those who would rather take the vacation are also entitled to 100 percent of the regular daily rate, provided he was present, or was on leave with pay, on the workday immediately preceding the holiday.

If the day is the worker’s day off but was required to render service, he or she would get a total of 260 percent for the first eight hours and another 30 percent for work in excess of eight hours.
