MANILA, Philippines — President Duterte has vowed to look into ways to increase the salaries of public school teachers, not this year but in 2020, Malacañang said yesterday.

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque Jr. disclosed the Chief Executive raised the issue again during the Cabinet meeting last Tuesday during which Cabinet members were tasked to look for ways and means to implement the increase in the next two years.

“Also in the Cabinet meeting, the entire Cabinet reaffirmed the President’s directive,” Roque said.

He said the administration will implement the last tranche of the Salary Standardization Law for public school teachers before the wage increase promised by the President will be applied.

“The rationale for this is the last tranche… under the SSL will be implemented in 2019,” Roque said.

“Now, the effort is not just to look for ways and means to increase the salary of all public school teachers, it is also to increase the salaries of all workers in the public sector. So it’s teachers and the public sector,” Roque added.

Reports pegged the current salaries of public school teachers from P19,000 to P43,000 depending on their levels.

During the Cabinet meeting last month, Duterte directed the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to find ways to increase teachers’ salaries via the second tax reform package.

However, the DBM and the Department of Education said doing so would be a financial burden to the government since they would  have to shell out billions in funds every year.

The President earlier broached the idea of raising teachers’ salaries following his signing of the law increasing the compensation of policemen and soldiers last month.

Those pushing for the teachers’ salary increase said there must be equality among all those working in government in terms of compensation.

Meanwhile, the early registration for incoming students in public schools this year will be implemented nationwide until Feb. 23, the Department of Education (DepEd) said.

Education Secretary Leonor Briones recently issued the basic education enrollment policy mandating the conduct of early registration for incoming public school students between the last Saturday of January and the last Friday of February every year.

For school year 2018-2019, early registration will run from Jan. 27 to Feb. 23.    – With Janvic Mateo
