MANILA, Philippines — Authorities on Tuesday reminded residents and the public to heed warnings from the local government authorities not to return to their residence within the extended permanent danger zone as Mayon Volcano continues to spew lava.

Mina Marasigan, National Disaster Risk and Reduction Management  Council spokesperson, said that a total of 5,318 families or 21,823 persons were forced to leave their residences as of Monday night due to a "lava fountain" from Mayon Volcano.

She added that the local government continues to conduct evacuation of residents, especially since the authorities have extended the permanent danger zone around Mayon Volcano.

Alert Level 3 remains in effect over areas near Mayon Volcano, which, according to the NDRRMC, means that it is currently in a relatively high level of unrest.

Hazardous eruption is also possible within weeks or even days, the NDRRMC report read.

Marasigan said that they are currently studying whether there is a need to raise the alert level.

Last Saturday, Mayon Volcano generated a steam driven explosion. Ash fall was found in the Municipalities of Camalig, Guinobatan, Daraga and Ligao City.

Government preparation

"The families may have to stay in evacuation centers for days or weeks. We have coordinated with the Department of Social Welfare and Development to ensure that we have stand by funds," Marasigan said.

She added that the NDRRMC also tapped members of the Philippine National Police and the Armed Forces of the Philippines for the security of those evacuated.

Marasigan also warned the residents against returning to their homes when volcanic activity slows down.

There are 18 evacuation centers housing the families forced out of their homes.

She stressed that the government has also prepared funds for the evacuation of their livestock to ease the worry of the residents of feeding the farm animals.
