SWS: Most Pinoys oppose revolutionary gov’t

MANILA, Philippines — More Filipinos are opposing the prospective proclamation of a revolutionary government by the Duterte administration, according to a recent survey conducted by the Social Weather Stations (SWS).

The survey, conducted from Dec. 8 to 16 with the results released on Friday, showed that a plurality or 39 percent of the respondents were against the proclamation of a revolutionary government.

Thirty one percent agreed, while the remaining 30 percent were undecided.

The survey was conducted weeks after President Duterte threatened to declare a revolutionary government if the country falls into chaos.

He later backtracked even as some of his supporters organized activities in support of such a proclamation.

Based on the survey, only Mindanao has more respondents supporting the revolutionary government than those who oppose it (38 percent agree, 21 percent disagree).

The rest of the country has more people opposing revolutionary government: Metro Manila (34 percent agree, 41 percent disagree), rest of Luzon (30 percent agree, 46 percent disagree) and the Visayas (26 percent agree, 43 percent disagree).

Disagreement to revolutionary government is higher among male (33 percent agree, 41 percent disagree) and female (29 percent agree, 37 percent disagree) respondents, as well as those from Class ABC (30 percent agree, 38 percent disagree) and D (31 percent agree, 40 percent disagree) socio-economic group.

Meanwhile, support is slightly higher among poorest Filipinos or those identified as belonging to Class E (36 percent agree, 33 percent disagree).

Opposition to revolutionary government is also higher than those who support it if the respondents are classified based on educational attainment and age group.

RevGov under present Constitution

The same survey also found that 48 percent think it is possible to have a revolutionary government under the present Constitution, while 27 percent said otherwise.

The remaining 24 percent has no opinion about the matter.

SWS said the proportion of those who say it is possible to have a revolutionary government in the current Constitution is highest in Metro Manila (58 percent), followed by Mindanao (48 percent), rest of Luzon (47 percent) and the Visayas (42 percent).

Meanwhile, 63 percent of the respondents said they are aware of the plan of Duterte to change the form of government.

Eighteen percent believe that Duterte has no plan to change the present form of government, while the remaining 19 percent has no answer.
