Gabriela launches anti-sexual harassment chatbot ‘Gabbie’

According to Gabriela, Gabbie is the first chat bot intended to fight sexual harassment. Gabbie/Facebook

MANILA, Philippines — Women's rights group Gabriela recently introduced the first chatbot in the Philippines to help make the reporting of sexual harassment easier.

Gabriela said Gabbie is a Facebook messenger chatbot which can be searched as “Gabbiegabriela” on the social media site.

“The human truth here is that women hesitate to report. Sexual harassment is a sensitive issue, after all. So we wanted to make that easier for them—through a tool that they use every day,” Gabriela’s Secretary General Joms Salvador said in a statement.

“We wanted to give them a friend that would listen—and an avenue for them to talk about these sensitive issues comfortably and confidentially,” she added.

Philstar.com tested the chatbot and found that Gabbie asks if the person wants to know what sexual harassment is, in which it provides a brief explainer, or wishes to report one. It also provides easy to understand information on the Philippine law that covers the type of harassment encountered by the person.

If you are reporting a case of sexual harassment, Gabbie asks if the incident happened on the street, the workplace, online or if it is committed by a stranger or someone known to the victim. Although there is no comprehensive Philippine law on gender-based sexual harassment committed online, victims can still seek legal action through Republic Act 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act which covers bullying, libel and slander on social media.

The chatbot compiles the information into a form which can be printed to be given to the victim’s lawyer or human resources department, to any authoritative government unit or to Gabriela for further assistance.

The chatbot also assures those reporting that no information provided by them would be shared with the public in compliance with Republic Act 10173 or the Data Privacy Act.
