Reds slam Trump’s ‘Phl prime real estate’ remark

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — US President Donald Trump’s view of the Philippines as “the most prime piece of real estate” is contemptuous of the country, the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) has said.

“(It) not only shows his imperialist, racist contempt of the Filipino people by stamping a real estate value on their homeland,” the CPP said in a statement issued before the weekend. “Worse, it pulls the Philippines into the vortex of its wars in Asia.”

Trump’s announcement after his Asian trip that the Philippines is “the most prime piece of real estate... an unbelievably important military location ...a perfect spot,” the CPP believed, “shows the US government’s priorities in its designs on the Philippines.”

The CPP said, “Aside from the already frequent military exercises, increased military equipment and training for the Armed Forces, Trump also announced that he will be giving $2 million to support Duterte’s criminal drug war.”

Though this was nothing new, the party said, “US imperialism manifested this view of the Philippines as its forward military base since the turn of the 20th  century when it waged a bloody colonial war on the Philippines to use it against China.”

From the 1950s to the 1970s, the US has consistently used the Philippines as a launching pad for its wars of aggression on Korea and Vietnam, it added.

This time, the CPP said, the US president “put it so bluntly, in an official White House statement to boot, raising the level of pressure the US will exercise to control this area in its Asian positioning.”

The CPP, which claims to have absolute control over the New People’s Army, however said, “In the end, it is the Filipino people, through their revolutionary and militant struggles, who will show Trump and his ilk that the Philippines is not a piece of real estate but a democratic, sovereign nation,” while congratulating NPA units which reportedly launched different forms of military action to underscore their protest of the Trump visit.

While on the streets, the CPP also tipped its hat to “patriotic forces who braved the water cannons and truncheons to show their protest against Trump.”
