Mobile phones, laptops, bladed weapons seized from jails

MANILA, Philippines — Mobile phones, laptops, bladed weapons, and a camera were seized by members of the Philippine National Police at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology on Monday.

A week after President Rodrigo Duterte visited the jails of the BJMP, the authorities presented to the media seized contrabands that included 517 cellular phones, 12 electronic gadgets and  cigarettes, lighters, cans of beer, and playing cards to the media.

The cellular phones will be subjected to forensic examination.

 

DILG Assistant Secretary Nestor Quinsay led the presentation to the press. He was accompanied by members of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency and the Quezon City Police District.

Duterte, last week, expressed satisfaction upon seeing the country's biggest jails teeming with inmates. The chief executive said that he will provide "each and every cell with a TV by the end of the month."

The president's view provide a direct contrast with the latest report of the Commission on Audit that stated our country's detention facilities in dire situation.

According to the COA report, our detention cells are already housing more jail population that they were designed to hold.

Last month, a similar clearing operation was conducted at the Quezon City jail. QC Jail Warden Superintendent Ermilito Moral clarified in a radio interview that some of the contrabands were submitted to the National Capital Region Office for safekeeping and examination.

Oplan Greyhound, under the BJMP, is clearing operation under the BJMP that aims to ensure safety of inmates inside their dormitories. —with report from Manuel Tupas
