Magnitude 5.1 quake hits Ilocos Sur

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.1 tremor rattled Ilocos Sur on Thursday afternoon.

In its latest bulletin, the Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the quake occurred at 3:06 p.m.

The institute said the quake’s epicenter was located 35 kilometers northwest of Santa Catalina, Ilocos Sur.

The tremor was felt at Intensity V in Sinait, Ilocos Sur and Intensity IV in Magsingal, Ilocos Sur and Bangued, Abra. 

On the other hand, provinces such as Vigan City; Santa and San Esteban, Ilocos Sur; Pasuquin Solsona and Carasi, Ilocos Norte; Tuguegarao, Cagayan; Flora and Flora, Apayao  experienced  the quake at Intensity III. 

The quake was also felt at Intensity II in Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur and Kapangan, Benguet.

According to Phivolcs Earthquake Intensity Scale, Intensity V refers to “strong” shakes generally felt by most people indoors and outdoors.

Phivolcs said no damage was expected although residents in nearby areas should prepare for possible aftershocks.

Six other quakes were recorded by Phivolcs on Thursday. These occurred in Batanes, Davao Oriental, North Cotabato and Zamboanga del Norte.

All the earthquakes recorded were determined to be tectonic in origin.
