Fratman Ralph Trangia expected at Senate inquiry tomorrow

Aegis Juris fratman Ralph Trangia is believed to be the driver of the vehicle used to transport Atio Castillo's body to the hospital. Rudy Santos

MANILA, Philippines — Fratman Ralph Trangia, who returned to the country last week, is expected to appear before the Senate tomorrow as its Committee on Public Order and Dangerous Drugs resumes its inquiry on the fatal hazing of Horacio "Atio" Castillo III.

The Senate continues its probe at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow on the death of Castillo, who is believed to be a victim of the brutal initiation rites of Aegis Juris Fraternity of the University of Santo Tomas.

Expected to attend is Trangia, who fled the country on Sept. 19, 2017 to the US. Three weeks since he left the country, Trangia and his mother returned.

Trangia is facing murder, anti-hazing, robbery and obstruction of justice complaints filed by the Manila Police District and parents of Castillo.

His mother is also facing a separate obstruction of justice rap.

Also expected to appear before the Senate is John Paul Solano, who first said he was a concerned citizen who found Castillo's body on a sidewalk in Tondo. It was later found out that Solano is also a member of Aegis Juris Fraternity.

  • Aeron Salientes

Release of Solano testimony

Meanwhile, Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II said the Senate resolution to release Solano's testimony is a "good development" as it would "shed light on the what happened during the initiation rites."

Solano, earlier at the Senate, gave a testimony at a closed-door session detailing what he knew about the initiation rights.

He was also given until October 16 to execute a sworn affidavit, but he failed to do so.

The Senate then issued a resolution to release the transcript of Solano's testimony.

The justice chief, in a text message to reporters, also said the testimony could be used as evidence in the Justice department's ongoing probe on the murder, robbery, and anti-hazing raps filed against the members of the Aegis Juris Fraternity.

The Justice department will resume its preliminary investigation hearing on October 24.
