Lagman: Sereno’s term as CJ ‘too long’
MANILA, Philippines — Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno’s 18-year term may be a bit too long, a lawmaker said yesterday.
“I think that 2030 is too long,” Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman told reporters.
Sereno’s term as chief magistrate will expire in July 2030 when she reaches the mandatory retirement age of 70.
Lagman, however, said it is up to Sereno to decide if she wants to relinquish her post sooner than 2030.
“It is her call if she wants to retire early. It’s hard to describe the length of tenure of the chief justice,” he said.
Sereno was appointed Supreme Court justice by former president Benigno Aquino III in 2010 and was named chief magistrate two years later.
She replaced Renato Corona, who was removed from office by the Senate sitting as an impeachment court in May 2012.
Sereno is the youngest and first woman chief justice whose term may span four administrations – from Aquino, Duterte and two more presidents to be elected in 2022 and 2028.
