MANILA, Philippines — The Human Rights Victims’ Claims Board (HRVCB) has approved another 2,035 claims for human rights violations during the martial law period.

The HRVCB, chaired by Lina Sarmiento, released the latest batch of eligible claimants yesterday coinciding with the 45th anniversary of the declaration of martial rule.

The names of the new approved claimants will be published in the HRVCB website and in some newspapers, Sarmiento said.

Of the number of approved claimants, 1,653 are new applicants and 382 are presumed claimants.

The HRVCB is an independent body created pursuant to Republic Act 10368 to recognize and provide reparations to victims of human rights violations during the regime of the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos.

Created in February 2014, the HRVCB was given until May 12, 2016 to complete the reparations. The deadline was extended to May 12, 2018 due to the volume of claims filed from May 2014 to May 2015.

Last May, the HRVCB awarded monetary compensation to more than 317 victims of human rights violations during martial law. The recipients constituted the first batch of 4,000 approved claimants.

So far, a total of P300 million has been released for the claimants.
