MANILA, Philippines  Viacom International Media Networks, owner of Nickelodeon, on Tuesday said it has decided to discontinue the plan to build a water park in Coron, Palawan.

“Viacom International Media Networks has mutually agreed with Coral World Park to discontinue the IP licensing agreement for the Nickelodeon-branded attraction and resort that was intended to be part of Coral World Park’s planned development in the western Philippine province of Palawan,” Corporate Communications Asia’s Senior Director Adeline Ong said in a press statement.

"Therefore, VIMN and Nickelodeon will no longer be involved with this proposed development. We wish Coral World Park well," she added.

Last January, reports said "Viacom's Viacom International Media Networks unit has unveiled plans to develop an undersea Nickelodeon Resort and Attraction in the Philippines. It will become part of Coral World Park Undersea — the world’s first undersea attraction to be developed in a 400-hectare development in Coron, Palawan."

The proposed project drew flak from environment advocates and organizations extending concerns on reefs around Coron. However, Tourism Secretary Corazon Wanda Tulfo-Teo clarified that the project will not literally be underwater and that it would be like a “floating” theme park.

Environmental advocates then lauded Viacom’s decision to cut ties with Coral Water Park.

“We commend Viacom International Media Networks, the media company that owns Nickelodeon, for heeding to the call of over 260,000 online petitioners and local communities to disengage with Coral World Park," said Save Philippine Seas executive director Anna Oposa, who was one of the petitioners in the website Bataris.org.ph.

Oposa, co-founder of Save Philippine Seas, earlier led a campaign against the supposed Nickelodeon theme park on Bataris.org.ph. She said the decision of Viacom only showed that the real power lies within the hands of the people.
