MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Sandiganbayan Justice Alexander Gesmundo as Supreme Court’s 178th associate justice.

Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea confirmed Gesmundo’s appointment to the members of the media.

Gesmundo is the fourth magistrate appointed by Duterte. The president has so far appointed Bedan law graduates Noel Tijam and Samuel Martires as well as former CA Presiding Judge Andres Reyes Jr.

The anti-graft magistrate will take the place of retired Associate Justice Jose Mendoza. He retired on Sunday.

Gesmundo is the chair of Sandiganbayan’s 7th Division. He also co-chaired the anti-graft court’s Committee on Rules and is the vice-chairperson of the Philippine Judicial Academy’s Department of Remedial Law.

Gesmundo started public service as a trial attorney in the Office of the Solicitor General in 1985. He also became a member of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines in the same year.

Like Reyes, Gesmundo is also an alumnus of Ateneo de Manila University School of Law where he graduated in 1984.

Gesmundo also previously served the Presidential Commission on Good Government and the Court of Tax Appeals.

The newly appointed magistrate was recognized as Most Outstanding Solicitor in 1988. He was subsequently promoted to Assistant Solicitor General in August 2002.
