MANILA, Philippines — Public Storm Warning Signal 1 has been raised in Batanes province as weather disturbance “Gorio” intensifies into a severe tropical storm and barrels northwestward.

In a severe weather bulletin issued Thursday afternoon, PAGASA said that Gorio will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon, which will bring moderate to occasionally heavy showers over Metro Manila and Western Luzon.

"Gorio has intensified into a severe tropical storm as it begins to move northwestward," it said.

Light to moderate rains should be expected over the rest of Luzon and Visayas, it added.

According to PAGASA, moderate to heavy rainfall should be expected within the 550-kilometer diameter of the tropical storm.

Gorio was located at 595 kilometers east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan as of 4 p.m. and is moving northwest at a speed of 13 kilometers per hour.

The weather disturbance is packing sustained winds of up to 90 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 115 kph.

Gorio is expected to be 400 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes tomorrow afternoon and 245 kilometers north northeast of Basco, Batanes on Saturday afternoon, the weather agency said.

Classes and work in Metro Manila and neighboring provinces were canceled on Thursday as heavy rains flooded many streets.
