MANILA, Philippines - Philippine Postal Corp. (PHLPost) Assistant Postmaster General Luis Carlos expressed willingness to deliver letters of support to the soldiers fighting in Marawi City.

Carlos said he would talk to the Post Office board of directors and with officials of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

Carlos said that he learned only yesterday about the appeal of the military to the public to send their notes of encouragement to the troops.

He said Postmaster General Joel Otarra as well as the members of the PHLPost board are likely to join the AFP program called #OgopMarawi.

Through the program #OgopMarawi, which means help Marawi, the military is giving ordinary citizens the opportunity to send notes of encouragement to troops fighting terrorists of the Maute group in the city since May 23.

It was reported last Friday that out of the more than 200 people who died in the fighting, 58 of them were soldiers and policemen while 26 others were civilians.

Aside from the letters, there is also Project Shoe Box wherein donors could pack a shoe box with two pairs of black socks, t-shirt, face towel, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, shaver, alcohol and bath soap for soldiers deployed in Marawi.

By sending these letters and personal items in the shoebox, the public would be able to boost the morale of the soldiers.

Carlos said that there is no problem and the PHLPost could help gather these letters and even the shoeboxes from donors nationwide and bring them to the soldiers in Marawi City, Lanao del Sur.

“I think that is something that we could do in support of our soldiers,” he added.

He will bring the matter before the PHLPost board of directors and Otarra would coordinate with the AFP.

“I will have to check with the board and the postmaster general but offhand, I think they would be happy to do that,” said Carlos.

With the ongoing fighting in Marawi, chances are the postal office in the city was closed and mailmen have left the city, but Carlos promised that the agency would find a way to deliver the letters and other donations to the soldiers.

The PHLPost could drop the letters and donations at the post offices in Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental or in Iligan City, Lanao del Norte.
