Six in 10 Pinoys trust United Nations — poll

Helen Flores - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Nearly six in 10 Filipinos continued to express “much trust” in the United Nations despite President Duterte’s repeated tirades against the body, a survey by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) showed.

The first quarter survey, taken from March 25 to 28, found 58 percent of adult Filipinos with much trust and 13 percent with little trust in the UN.

The UN has criticized the administration’s bloody war on drugs.

The poll also found 40 percent with much trust and 21 percent with little trust in the European Union, and 31 percent with much trust and 22 percent with little trust in Amnesty International.

The UN’s net satisfaction rating has been at good levels since SWS first surveyed it in November 1994, starting at +45 and reaching as high as +49 in November 2001.

The latest score of +45 in March 2017, however, was three points below the +48 in December 2016, and is similar to the +45 in March 2003, December 2002 and November 1994.

The net satisfaction rating of the EU stayed moderate at +19 in March 2017, despite the seven-point drop from +26 in December 2016. It used to be a neutral +8 in August 2012.

The net satisfaction rating of Amnesty International is a neutral +8, correctly rounded, in March 2017. This was the first time SWS included AI in its survey.

The SWS terminology for Net Trust Ratings: +70 and above, “excellent”; +50 to +69, “very good”; +30 to +49, “good”; +10 to +29, “moderate”; +9 to -9, “neutral”; -10 to -29, “poor”; -30 to -49, “bad”; -50 to -69, “very bad”; -70 and below, “execrable.”
