Rewards sought for N. Cotabato escapees’ arrest

John Unson - The Philippine Star

NORTH COTABATO, Philippines – Rewards should be offered to recapture more than 90 inmates who escaped from the North Cotabato District Jail in Kidapawan City last week, according to the provincial peace and order council.

The committee recommended that a reward of P1 million be put up for information leading to the arrest of suspected drug lord Melvin Casangyao and P10,000 for each of the other escapees, acting North Cotabato Gov. Shirlyn Macasarte Villanueva said on Tuesday.

Villanueva said the council proposed that the money for the rewards be drawn from the peace and security budget of the provincial government.

She said the Department of the Interior and Local Government also committed to augment the funds for the rewards.

Gunmen reportedly led by Ismael Nasser attacked the jail to free the inmates, who are mostly facing charges for illegal drugs.

Villanueva said the council also recommended that a reward of P1 million be offered for the arrest of Nasser.
