Classes resume on Tuesday

MANILA, Philippines – Classes in public elementary and high schools will resume on Tuesday, according to the Department of Education (DepEd).

Based on the school calendar released by DepEd, Christmas break in public schools is scheduled only from Dec. 22 to Jan.1.

The resumption of classes was moved one day from the original school calendar after President Duterte issued a proclamation declaring Dec. 26 and Jan. 2 as special non-working days.

Meanwhile, the DepEd said private schools may determine their respective schedules for Christmas vacation as long as they comply with the minimum of 180 days of contact between teachers and students.

In public schools, the current academic calendar allots 202 days, giving schools 22 buffer days to accommodate class suspensions due to bad weather.

Earlier, Sen. Grace Poe had proposed that the education agency implement longer Christmas break for students to address traffic during the holiday rush.
