MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Coast Guard on Thursday formally commissioned the second of 10 multi-role response vessels from Japan, the BRP Malabrigo (MRRV-4402).

The 44-meter Malabrigo joins the BRP Tubbataha in the Philippine Coast Guard Fleet.

Transportation Undersecretary for Maritime Felipe Judan said it will be used to perform the Coast Guard's mandate of patrol and rescue.

The PCG, which is attached to the Department of Transportation, said the Malabrigo will not only be used during search and rescue operations but will also ensure environmental protection.

The ship is also expected to boost the agency’s capability in maritime security especially against terrorism and illegal drugs.

BRP Malabrigo was turned over to the PCG on December 8. The commissioning ceremony for it was held Thursday morning at the Philippine Coast Guard headquarters in Pier 15, Port Area, Manila.

PCG officer-in-charge Commodore Joel Garcia, BRP Malabrigo Captain Lt. Commander Geronimo Tuvilla and Judan were present during the ceremony. They toured the vessel and tested its navigation capabilities.

The first of the 10 Parola (lighthouse) class Philippine Coast Guard vessels from Japan, BRP Tubattaha, on the other hand, was commissioned by President Rodrigo Duterte on October 12.

He thanked the Japanese government for donating the coast guard ships.

Judan said that the Tubbataha 14 fishermen last week from big waves.
