Russia eyed as new OFW destination
MANILA, Philippines - The government is looking at Russia as the next work destination for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said yesterday.
According to Bello, President Duterte will discuss labor relations when he visits and meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin early next year.
“I already sent a memo to the President requesting him to include the possible deployment of skilled and professional workers to Russia,” Bello said, referring to the demand for construction and household service workers in the Russia.
Bello explained that because of the decline in oil prices in the Middle East, there are fewer job opportunities in that region and Russia is a good alternative for skilled and professional workers looking for high paying jobs.
In 2014, about 4,000 OFWs were working in construction, hotels and households in Russia
