ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – Government forces have recaptured the town hall occupied by the Islamic State-inspired Maute group in Butig town, Lanao del Sur, military officials said yesterday.
The battle to retake the town left 35 members of the militant group dead and five others wounded, Western Mindanao Command spokesman Maj. Filemon Tan Jr. said.
He revealed 13 soldiers were wounded in encounters with the armed group, which began on Saturday morning when 200 to 300 militants took over the town after disarming its policemen. The attack forced 16,000 residents to flee. – Roel Pareño, Cecille Suerte Felipe, Evelyn Macairan
