CEBU, Philippines - The centuries-old tales of Andres Bonifacio, in fighting for independence from Spanish colonial rule, has left a mark in the Filipino psyche.

For social science professor Richard Fernandez, chairperson of the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy of the University of San Jose - Recoletos, Bonifacio's influence can be seen in present undertakings such as the war the current administration is waging to liberate the country from the drug menace.

Fernandez said the approach of President Rodrigo Duterte is reflective of Bonifacio's practical ways.

"In present times, under the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte, the government is resorting to practical means. Just like Bonifacio, he (Duterte) is more practical in his approaches in solving this (drug) problem," he told The Freeman.

Comparing Bonifacio to national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, Fernandez said the latter's ways were idealistic, peaceful, and diplomatic.

Being idealistic means subscribing to particular standards that are accepted universally such as laws or resolutions while being practical may involve resorting to means that are necessitated by immediate demands of circumstances.

Fernandez opined a more practical approach may be the more appropriate approach for the present administration, considering that the country lies on a pitiful situation due to the prevalence of crime and corruption.

"We are in a very dire situation. Philippines is already in a very bad situation in terms of governance. This calls for crucial decisions. The government has to resort to drastic measures in these trying times," he said.

For one, Philippine politics is "very dirty" from the local to the national level with some elective officials even linked to the illegal drug trade.

"This calls for practical approach and not just ideal means. We need to be realistic in a way," Fernandez said.

"If we want to fight for our democracy and win our freedom, there should be war and we need to wage our battle against crime and corruption," he added.

Today, Filipinos continue to commemorate Bonifacio's heroism every November 30, the same day he was born. (FREEMAN)
