Deftac Ribeiro dominates International BJJ Open
CEBU, Philippines - Deftac Ribeiro-Philippines emerged as the winningest squad in the 2016 Dumau International Jiujitsu Open staged at the SM Seaside City over the weekend.
The two-day tilt participated in by elite grapplers from Philippines, Japan, Singapore and Brazil featured a gi and no-gi categories
Led by Alvin Aguilar, the first Filipino Brazilian jiujitsu black belt, Deftac dominated with authority with a total of 131 points. Atos Philippines and 90/Eight BJJ were a distant second with 51 points each.
Among those who produced medalds for Deftac in the gi grappling were brown belter Joey Lepiten, purple belter Leo Gaerlan and Phil Rizon, while Fidel Ballesteros and Mark Oliver Co reigned supreme in their respective divisions in the blue belt.
Those who earlier spotlighted Deftac’s golden showing were Nino Aposaga, Lemuel Maglinte, Josephus Guadez, Gian Carlo Palatulon, Duane Gacasan, Jonathan Narisma, Charlie Ratcliff, Charles Torres, Ferdie Fernandez and female fighters Maria Aisa Ratcliff and Jenny Fernandez.
In the no-gi or freestyle grappling, the gold medalists were Maglinte, Guadez, Palatulon, Fernandez and Caryl Abigail Conte.
A double gold medallist, Maglinte is the assistant sports editor of both The Freeman and Banat News.
The silver medalists from Deftac Ribiero were Raymund Varilla, Raymund Revilles, Edward Reyes, Evelyn Ruiz, Kenn Jumao-as, Marvin Lim and Kyle John Lee, while the bronze medallists were Nicole Lim, Edward Reyes and Honey Leis Mionda. LPM (FREEMAN)
