Don Nicasio Chiong Veloso, patriarch of the Chiong-Veloso clan

CEBUPEDIA - Clarence Paul Oaminal - The Freeman

Nicasio, a Chinese whose surname was Chiong when he came to Cebu, was added a second surname and that is Veloso. This was so because his padrino had that surname. It was Don Mariano Veloso, the wealthiest man of Cebu during his lifetime, who was his padrino. The Veloso clan is of Portuguese descent. Adding the name or carrying the surname of a padrino sent a message to the community that the person was under the protection of his godfather/padrino, in Cebu the renaming of Nicasio gave the birth to the surname, Chiong Veloso.

Don Mariano Veloso married Consuelo Carratala who was the daughter of Feliciana Enriquez Carratala. The 7th child of Don Mariano Veloso by the name of Milagros married Dr. Manuel Cuenco-son of Don Mariano Jesus Cuenco, Cebu governor, congressman of the old 5th District, and senate president-who also became governor of Cebu and the secretary of the Department of Health. A son of Dr. Manuel Cuenco by the name of Antonio V. Cuenco, a lawyer and alumnus of the Ateneo de Manila served for decades as congressman of Cebu City 2nd District, married Nancy Roa who also served as congresswoman of Cebu City 2nd District. A daughter of Don Mariano by the name of Gaudalupe married Edilberto Chiong Veloso Osmeña, the son of Don Sergio Suico Osmeña Sr. The couple had a son by the name of Renato married Ma. Victoria Zayc. He eventually became known as one of the finest vice mayors Cebu City ever had.

Don Nicasio Chiong Veloso married Genoveva Visitacion Rosales (died on October 26, 1903). The couple produced the following children whose descendants became the leaders of Cebu in politics and business.

His first wife was Filomena Regis and their son by the name of Juan who also became a lawyer on November 3, 1905 and eventually becoming the judge of the Court of First Instance of Cebu. Juan married Natividad Gandiongco. Don Segundo Singson became the acting governor of Cebu during the transition government of Governor Julio Llorente who was appointed by the Americans but lost to Don Juan Climaco in Cebu's first election. A nephew of Governor Juan Climaco, the son of his brother Valeriano who married Gliceria Veloso by the name of Arsenio married Juanita Osmeña, daughter of Victoriano Osmeña and Januaria Cabrera. The grandparents of Juanita were Don Severino Osmeña and Vicenta Rita. Arsenio Climaco became Cebu governor. His sister, Concepcion married Luis Osmeña. Don Severino Osmeña's second wife was Doña Paula Suico and they had two children: Don Lazaro and Doña Juana, the mother of President Sergio Suico Osmeña Sr. A half-brother of Doña Juana, by the name of Don Tomas who married Doña Faustina whose children became nuns became Don Sergio's father figure and benefactor.

The second marriage of Don Segundo to Eleuteria, the daughter of Don Nicasio, produced the following children: Paz who married Jose Hernaez, Genoveva who married Dr. Augusto O. Villalon Sr., Rosario who married Dr. Virgilio Gonzales, and Concepcion.

Another daughter of Don Nicasio by the name of Tomasa, called Doña Masay, married Don Pedro Rodriguez who became congressman of the old 7th District of Cebu and was called the grand old man of Bogo.
