“Go Green Cebu” Winners
CEBU, Philippines - Barangay Sambag II bagged the grand prize in the “Go Green Cebu” project – an inter-barangay competition and initiative that promotes vertical vegetable gardening in an urban setting.
Recognized during the project’s culminating and awarding activity held on October 8 at the Plaza Independencia grounds, Barangay Sambag II bested eight other Cebu City barangays that participated in the project. Barangays Basak Pardo and Luz placed second and third, respectively.
Launched in August this year, the “Go Green Cebu” project was a partnership between Jollibee Foods Corporation, the City Agriculture Department, the Cebu City Environment and Natural Resources Office and various other local government units.
The competition encouraged participating barangays to cultivate vertical vegetable gardens utilizing recycled and up-cycled materials (like Jollibee paper cups, tin cans, buckets and the like). Recyclable materials were sourced from Jollibee stores located within their zones.
In the light of the urban congestion that makes traditional vegetable gardening no longer feasible for most households in the city, the “Go Green Cebu” project proposes vertical vegetable gardening as the most practical and sustainable option. (YRST)(FREEMAN)
