Duterte refuses to meet Jaybee Sebastian

MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo rejected the request of a New Bilibid Prison (NBP) high-profile inmate allegedly involved in the illegal drug trade to meet with him.

Inmate Jaybee Sebastian earlier agreed to cooperate with the investigation into the recent riot inside the NBP if the chief executive would talk to him.

"I do not talk to criminals. He can go to the fiscal if he wants or maybe write a letter to [Foreign Affairs] Secretary [Perfecto] Yasay if that is feasible," Duterte told members of the press after arriving from Vietnam.

Sebastian was one of the three injured inmates during a stabbing incident at the NBP earlier this week.

Lawyer Eduardo Arriba said that Sebastian believes that the incident branded as a "riot among inmates" might be related to the investigation into the illegal drug trade inside the prison.

Duterte said that the recent incident was the "comeuppance and the law of karma" for the inmates involved in the illegal drug trade.

"Sinasabi ko hiningi ninyo lahat 'yan. I've been telling everybody 'yang drugs na 'yan hinihingi ninyo sa buhay n'yo, dadating 'yan. I said be careful of what you wish for or what you want because you might get it," Duterte said.
