'Ferdie' moves closer to Taiwan as 'Gener' enters PAR
MANILA, Philippines - Typhoon Ferdie (international name "Meranti") intensifies as it moves towards Taiwan early Wednesday after making landfall over Batanes.
At 4:00 a.m., the typhoon was located 45 kilometers northeast of Itbayan, Batanes packing maximum sustained winds of 220 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 255 kph.
Signal number 4 remains hoisted over Batanes while signal number 3 is still up over the Babuyan Group of Islands.
At least three areas are under public storm warning signal number 2, which include the following:
- Ilocos Norte,
- Apayao
- northern Cagayan
The following areas are also under public storm warning signal number 1:
- rest of Cagayan
- northern Isabela
- Kalinga
- Abra
- northern Ilocos Sur
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) advised residents in northern Luzon to take precautionary measures against impacts of very strong winds and heavy rainfall while tropical cyclone warning signal over northern Isabela is now lifted.
Ferdie is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Wednesday morning or afternoon.
Meanwhile, the state weather bureau is monitoring a new tropical storm that may enter PAR between 11 p.m. on Wednesday to 1:00 a.m. the following day.
The said tropical cyclone with international name "Malakas" (name contributed by the Philippines) will be called "Gener" once it enters the country.
PAGASA forecasted that the new weather disturbance will move west northwest at 20 kph.
