720-g cocaine slips through Philippine airport

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - A Filipina tourist was arrested in Hong Kong last week for allegedly carrying cocaine, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said yesterday.

Citing a report of the Philippine consulate general in Hong Kong, DFA spokesman Charles Jose said the 37-year-old Filipina, whose identity was withheld, was arraigned on Monday for allegedly carrying around 720 grams of cocaine with an estimated market value of $750,000.

“She will await bail hearing and start of trial,” Jose said.

Representatives of the Philippine consulate have visited the Filipina in jail.

“The consulate will extend necessary consular and legal assistance. As a matter of policy, we don’t disclose the name and other personal details,” Jose said.

Meanwhile, the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) will investigate how the suspect managed to leave the country with the drugs.

MIAA general manager Ed Monreal ordered airport security officials to conduct a thorough investigation and questioning of all personnel manning the initial and final security check at Terminals 2 and 3 of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

Monreal said they would determine the flight that the suspect took for Hong Kong, and from which airport.

The Filipina was arrested upon her arrival at the Chek Lap Kok on July 30.

Charges were filed against her on Aug. 1 before the Tsuen Wan Court.

The drugs were discovered as the suspect’s luggage and bag were passing through the X-ray machine. – With Rudy Santos
