26 bike riders killed in Metro Manila in 2015 – MMDA

MANILA, Philippines – At least 26 bicycle riders and a pedestrian have died in various bicycle-related accidents last year, according to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority.

MMDA’s statistics on bicycle-related road mishaps showed the most number of fatalities were recorded in the month of April with five and the lowest in May and November with one each.

At least 932 people were injured within the same period, with March and May posting the highest number with 88 each.

An average of three non-fatal injuries from bicycle-related road accidents were reported per day.

Among the cities, Manila had the most number of fatalities with eight, followed by Quezon City with four, Valenzuela and Parañaque with three each, Caloocan with two and one each in Las Piñas, Malabon, Marikina, Muntinlupa, Navotas, Pasay and Taguig.

No bicycle-related death was recorded in Makati, Mandaluyong, Pasig, Pateros and San Juan. 

Of the reported non-fatal injuries, Quezon City had the most number with 141, followed by Pasig City with 100 and Las Piñas 99. 

Pateros has no reported injury from bicycle-related accidents.

The MMDA said most of the reported injuries or 949 of them were riding the bicycle themselves, 128 were passengers and 44 were pedestrians.
