Carina raises storm signals in 3 provinces

Janvic Mateo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The state weather bureau yesterday raised storm signal No. 1 on three provinces after the low-pressure area in the Philippine area of responsibility intensified into Tropical Depression Carina.

Under signal No. 1 are Catanduanes and Eastern and Northern Samar, which are expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall.

“The rest of the Visayas and the provinces of Albay, Sorsogon and Masbate are alerted against moderate to heavy rains, which may trigger flashfloods and landslides,” the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.

“Fisherfolk are alerted against moderate to rough seas over the eastern seaboards of Luzon and the Visayas,” PAGASA added.

As of 5 p.m., Carina was at 135 kilometers northeast of Borongan City in Easter Samar. The weather system has maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour near the center, according to PAGASA.

Estimated rainfall amount is from moderate to heavy within the 300-kilometer diameter of the tropical depression, which is forecast to move northwest at 11 kph.

Initial forecast positions released by the weather bureau showed that Carina may make landfall in the northern part of Luzon tomorrow.

The cyclone is expected to be at 300 km east of Daet, Camarines Norte this afternoon and 105 east of Tuguegarao, Aurora tomorrow afternoon.

It is forecast to be at 420 km west of Calayan, Cagayan or outside of the Philippine area of responsibility on Monday afternoon.

Heavy rainfall

PAGASA also issued heavy rainfall warning in some parts of the country yesterday due to the severe weather system that is embedded in the intertropical convergence zone.

Among the areas that experienced heavy rainfall were the provinces in CARAGA, Davao and Eastern Visayas, as well as in Zamboanga peninsula.

Thunderstorms also affected other parts of the country.

“Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms will prevail over Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon,” said the weather bureau.

“Moderate to occasionally strong winds blowing from the southwest will prevail over Eastern Mindanao and its coastal waters will be moderate to occasionally rough. Light to moderate winds coming from northeast to east will prevail over Luzon and coming from the southwest to south over Visayas and the rest of Mindanao with slight to moderate seas,” it added.
