Mandaue bicycle lanes soon to become reality

Christell Fatima M. Tudtud - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Mandaue City Government will push through with the installation of bike lanes along S.B. Cabahug Street after these were not implemented December of last year.

Florentino Nimor, head of the Mandaue City Planning and Development Office, said yesterday that the bike lanes are actually part of the city’s project plan.

“Yes, kay part man na sa atong project plan gyud dinhi. Nagsugod naman gani ang sa ‘city core’ kining makita ninyo. Mapuro na ni siya og bricks. Kining nia nga pavement diri inside City Hall, bricks na gyud na siya,” Nimor said.

The bricked pavement within the City Hall’s area, Nimor explained, is environment-friendly and is good for flood-prevention.

“Permeable man ang iyang pavement, mosuyop ug tubig…inig suyop ana sa tubig, mo-diritso na siya og replenish sa ground og water,” he said.

Nimor said that they can implement this plan after the city’s three contractors will finish repairing the sidewalks along A. Del Rosario Street, around City Hall, as well as along S.B. Cabahug Street.

Mandaue City has no ordinance for bike lanes but the lanes can be built under the city’s updated Comprehensive Land Use Plan.

The bike lane was not realized late last year due to lack of social preparations according to the evaluation made by former city administrator James Abadia.

“He advised me that kinahanglan og social preparation, meaning grupohan nimo ang mga bikers una, unya another mag-install og mga soft infra. Aside from the lane, naa gyud mga bike stand unta diri,” Nimor said.

The creation of bike lanes was planned after the city has observed that its one-way traffic scheme in the area, that started last August, sped up the flow of vehicles through S.B. Cabahug and J. P Burgos St. — making it hard for pedestrian to cross the street.

They said with the space for motorized vehicles reduced, traffic will move more slowly and allow pedestrians easier crossing. — (FREEMAN)
