MANILA, Philippines – The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has assured the new government officials of the church's support.

“The greatest promise the Church can offer any government is vigilant collaboration, and that offer, we make now,” CBCP President and Lingayen Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas said in a statement posted on the CBCP website.

He added that members of the Catholic Church are urged to “work with the government for the good of all.”

The church also called on to next leaders to address the issues of women, children, and the indigenous people.

“Children need care that cannot be postponed.  And many women still find themselves in situations of exploitation. Indigenous peoples remain marginalized and the vaunted growth in the economy still has to mean something significant for Filipinos living outside urban areas,” noted Villegas.

Although the Church expressed support, it also noted that it would remain “vigilant” of the government officials’ actions as the church “speak out to teach and to prophesy, to admonish and to correct - for this is our vocation.”

Villegas also encouraged those who didn’t win this elections to “contribute to the building of the Kingdom of God.  It is for you to discover your paths, in faith and in docility to God's spirit.” — Joyce Jimenez
