Jinggoy casts vote in San Juan

MANILA, Philippines – After being allowed by the Sandiganbayan Fifth Division to vote outside his detention quarters, detained Sen. Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada on Monday voted at Xavier School, San Juan City.

Reports said Estrada stayed in his polling precinct for only 12 to 15 minutes.

Estrada last May 2 asked the Sandiganbayan to allow him to cast his vote in San Juan City and was granted a two-hour furlough from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. of May 9 to leave his detention quarters at the Philippine National Police (PNP) Custodial Center in Camp Crame, Quezon City and exercise his right of suffrage.

In his motion, Estrada said that “it is every citizen’s constitutional right to vote.”

Estrada, whose daughter Janella Ejercito is running for vice mayor in San Juan City , was granted permission to vote only for national positions.

The senator was detained in Camp Crame for plunder charges related to the pork barrel scam. Another senator tagged in the scandal, Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr., was also able to vote in Bacoor, Cavite early Monday.
