Commission seeks report on Comelec website hacking

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – The newly organized National Privacy Commission (NPC) is taking seriously the hacking of the Commission on Elections (Comelec)’s website and database.

NPC commissioner Raymund Liboro said he wrote the Comelec earlier this week to ask for a full disclosure of the incident in order to allow NPC to determine the extent of the breach.

“We will get to the bottom of this and help Comelec map out immediate, medium- and long-term responses,” he added.

Meanwhile, The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Friday filed charges for violation of the Cybercrime Prevention Act and Data Privacy Law against a second suspect in the hacking of the Comelec website.

If proven guilty, systems integration engineer Joenel de Asis, 23, may be sentenced from six to 20 years in jail for the first violation and three years imprisonment and a fine of P2 million for the second.
