BFAR urges gov't to explore Benham Rise
MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) on Tuesday urged the government to strengthen its presence in Benham Rise, the country's newest territory off the eastern coast of Aurora province.
BFAR director Asis Perez said that government presence in the area would encourage small and medium-scale fisherfolk to explore the 13-million hectare fishing ground.
"Without the government’s support, the small and medium-scale fishermen will be afraid to explore the area," Perez said.
A three-year fishing survey conducted by BFAR showed that albacore and big eye tuna were the dominant species of tuna caught in the area.
Perez noted that exploratory tuna longline fishing surveys in the area would support the National Payao Program which seeks to increase marine fish production.
The BFAR official, however, noted that conservation must also be considered alongside the utilization of natural resources.
"There has to be a direct connection between utilization and conservation—a balance has to be made," Perez said.
Benham Rise, which is virtually larger than Luzon, has only been confirmed as part of the Philippine territory on April 12, 2012.
The area is home to high-value fish species including blue-fin tuna and black and white marlin, according to a report. — Patricia Lourdes Viray
