Government assistance for fallen soldiers sought

Christina Mendez - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – Independent presidential candidate Sen. Grace Poe yesterday called for justice for the 18 soldiers who were killed in clashes with Abu Sayyaf bandits in Basilan.

Poe also urged the government to provide financial assistance to the families of the fallen soldiers.

“This incident highlights the importance of giving priority to the needs of soldiers and policemen,” she said.

Poe condemned the Abu Sayyaf for the latest attacks against the military.

She called for counter attacks by the military and police against the Islamic militants.

“We condemn the Abu Sayyaf and its supporters in the strongest terms for the murders of the soldiers who were on legitimate military operations in Basilan,” she said.

Poe described the Abu Sayyaf militants as “terrorists.”

“We call on the public to be vigilant in reporting to authorities those groups and individuals, including public officials, who support and coddle the Abu Sayyaf and other armed groups for their selfish gains at the expense of peace and security. They should be exposed and answer for their criminal acts,” she said.

Eighteen Army soldiers were killed and 50 others were wounded in clashes with Abu Sayyaf bandits in Basilan on Saturday.

Five militants were killed, the military said.

The Army was reportedly targeting an Abu Sayyaf commander who has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group.

Meanwhile, Sen. Ralph Recto urged President Aquino to make his remaining days in office worthwhile by finishing off the Abu Sayyaf.

“Finishing off the Abu Sayyaf is President Aquino’s last job and the next president’s first,” Recto said, adding the issue should be included in the last presidential debate.

Recto said the next presidential debate should include a question on how to end Abu Sayyaf’s terrorism.

He said Aquino’s successor should go after the Abu Sayyaf, which still holds at least 14 hostages.
