Government to lease 5 Japanese aircraft for maritime patrol

LIPA CITY, Batangas – The government will lease five aircraft from Japan to help patrol the country’s maritime territory, President Aquino announced yesterday.

“We are leasing from Japan five TC-90 training aircraft to assist our navy in patrolling our territories, particularly in the West Philippine Sea,” Aquino told the gathering at the change of command ceremony at the Fernando Air Base.

New Philippine Air Force chief Lt. Gen. Edgar Fallorina replaced Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Delgado, who received awards for his 37 years of dedicated service as he retired yesterday.

The President did not give any further details on the TC-90

Last week, the Philippines and Japan signed a deal on the transfer of military equipment and technology, a document Japan needs to allow it to export weapons and guarantee they will not be transferred to a third party.

Armed Forces of the Philippines spokesman Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla said the deal for the Japanese aircraft was being finalized.
