UN official meets AFP exec

MANILA, Philippines – The United Nations (UN) Special Adviser of the Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide Undersecretary Adama Dieng on Wednesday afternoon met with Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) officials as part of his visit in the country.

Aside from meeting with AFP deputy chief-of-staff Lt. Gen. Edgar Fallorina at the Hall of Flags of Camp Aguinaldo’s General Headquarters Building, Dieng also paid a visit to the headquarters.

Dieng, a legal and human rights expert, is in the country to serve as a resource speaker in the second International Meeting Against Mass Atrocity Crimes hosted by the Philippines. It will run from February 1 to 5.

The meeting is spearheaded by the Global Action Against Mass Atrocity Crimes (GAAMAC) yearly. It seeks to spread learning and good practice among representatives of UN Member States to build their capacities to prevent mass atrocity crimes and to develop and implement national preventive strategies through dialogues and platform for exchange.

GAAMAC is a state-led initiative to prevent mass atrocity crimes which include ethnic cleansing, crimes against humanity, genocide and war crimes.

On Wednesday, Ambassador of Australia to the Philippine Amanda Gorely paid a courtesy could at the Hall of Flags as she recently assumed her position to replace former Ambassador of Australia to the Philippines, Bill Twedell. She met with  AFP Chief Gen. Hernando Irriberi.
