Holiday pay for workers today

Mayen Jaymalin - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Workers reporting for work today will receive double pay.

Employers nationwide must abide by proper holiday pay rules, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said in an advisory.

Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said workers are entitled to additional pay on Nov. 30, which is a regular holiday.

“I urge our private sector employers to observe the pay rules and core labor standards applicable on said day for our workers’ welfare and protection,” she said.

Malacañang earlier declared Nov. 30 as a regular holiday in honor of the ‘great plebeian,’ Andres Bonifacio, who was born on Nov. 30, 1863.

Under the rules, workers who will report for work will receive 200 percent of their basic wage on the first eight hours, Baldoz said.

For work in excess of eight hours, workers shall be paid an additional 30 percent of hourly rate, she added.

Workers required to work on their scheduled day off shall be paid 230 percent on their first eight hours. Another 30 percent shall be given for work in excess of eight hours.

Those who do not report for work would still receive their regular daily pay.

In case the day immediately preceding the holiday on Nov. 30 is a non-work day in the establishment, or is the scheduled rest day of the employee, the employee shall not be deemed on leave of absence on that day, in which case he or she shall be entitled to the regular holiday pay.
