'Marilyn' weakens, moves northeast

MANILA, Philippines - Typhoon "Marilyn" slightly weakened and accelerated while moving northeast, weather bureau PAGASA said on Tuesday.

At 10 a.m., the center of the typhoon was located 1,135 kilometers (km) east of Aparri, Cagayan with maximum winds of 140 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts of up to 170 kph. It is expected to move northeast at 11 kph.

"Estimated rainfall amount is from moderate to heavy within the 500 km diameter of the typhoon," PAGASA said.

PAGASA said that the typhoon is not expected to make landfall but will enhance the northeast monsoon or "amihan" which will affect the eastern section of the country.

"Cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and isolated thunderstorms will be experienced over Eastern Visayas while partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains is expected over the provinces of Cagayan and Batanes," the weather bureau said.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms.

"Moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast will prevail over the entire archipelago with moderate to rough seas," PAGASA said.

The weather bureau did not raise any storm warming signal in the country.

Marilyn is forecasted to exit the Philippine are of responsibility by Thursday evening or Friday morning and head toward Japan.
