De Lima to resign in ‘due time’

Rosette Adel - Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines – Justice Secretary Leila De Lima on Tuesday said she will not resign just yet after being at the center of the controversy between the government and Iglesia ni Cristo (INC).

"I will resign in due time, you know when that is, when I've fully decided I'm running in 2016," De Lima said.

De Lima clarified her resignation date following rumors that she is resigning due to the INC crisis.

On her birthday, August 27, members of INC staged a protest in front of the office of Department of Justice in Manila, questioning De Lima’s motive in starting the probe on the illegal detention case filed against the group’s ministers.

The protest lasted for five days and spilled over to EDSA. The rally protests were officially ended on Monday following a meeting and resolution between the INC and the government.

De Lima also said there was no deal made between the government and the INC.

"As far as I know, there is no deal struck between the two sides (government and INC)," De Lima said.

"I'm asking for understanding for refusing to talk extensively for now. I don't want to be misquoted," she added.

The palace on Monday likewise said there was no deal or compromise made to stop INC's protest. The presidential spokesmen said the INC conflict was resolved through diplomacy and mutual respect.

Meanwhile, the Justice secretary has not yet confirmed her senatorial bid. On her birthday, she just hinted it was time to move on “from point J to point S."
