MANILA, Philippines - President Benigno Aquino III and visiting Thailand Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Friday strengthened the bilateral ties of their countries, particularly on defense cooperation.

During a joint press conference following their bilateral meeting, Aquino said he and Prayut concluded numerous agreements and enhanced cooperation in areas including defense, air services, agriculture, energy, tourism and culture.

In terms of defense and security, Aquino said they welcomed the signing of the terms of reference for the working group of the Philippine Army and Royal Thai Army in April.

"In the same way that the prime minister was instrumental in strengthening the partnership between our Armed Forces during his time as chief of the Royal Thai Army, so too does he continue to work with us in order to forge the kind of defense relations that enables us to serve our peoples in a more holistic manner," Aquino said.

"We are confident that this agreement will further strengthen our defense and security cooperation for the welfare of our peoples and of our brothers in ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations)," he added.

Prayut said Thailand will attend the first joint commission for military cooperation to be hosted by the Philippines this year.

The two countries are enhancing their defense ties amid China's aggression in the disputed West Philippine Sea (South China Sea).

Prayut said he exchanged views with Aquino on the regional situation, particularly on the ASEAN-China relations and the territorial dispute with the Asian giant.

He said Thailand affirmed to cooperate with the Philippines and ASEAN countries in fully implementing the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea and promoting consultations in the territorial dispute.
