Henares: No 35% tax on OFW dollar remittances
MANILA, Philippines – Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Kim Henares on Wednesday denied that there is an imposed 35-percent tax on dollar remittances from overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
Henares clarified that there is no law stating that dollar remittances are subject to taxing.
“Walang buwis. Meron siguro silang binabayarang fee sa remittance center pero hindi 'yan bayad sa gobyerno,” said in a radio interview with dzMM.
Henares made this clarification following a claim from a blog post that BIR announced that OFWs’ dollar remittances will be subjected to a 35-percent “gift tax.”
The BIR chief appealed to netizens and asked them to stop spreading false claims and reports in social media.
“Wala namang masama mag-social media pero pwede ba maging responsable tayo lalo na ngayon na galit pa 'yung mga tao tapos dadagdagan, gagatungan natin,” Henares said.
The Bureau of Customs was earlier criticized by the OFW community for implementing a new directive to open balikbayan boxes. President Benigno Aquino III ordered to stop the physical inspection of the boxes.
