MANILA, Philippines — Hounded with image problems, the Philippine National Police (PNP)'s 160,000 officers and personnel should do at least one good deed everyday, the new police chief said.

In his message during the traditional Monday flag-raising ceremony, PNP Director General Ricardo Marquez said the collective effort of the men and women of the PNP is vital.

Marquez also reiterated his instructions of going back to the "basics" of policing, namely patrolling, the review of disciplinary mechanism, continuous work on the morale and welfare of the PNP personnel, immediate submission of outstanding accomplishments, and the review of policies in placement and promotion.

"We will push a legacy to the ground, more personnel on the ground, because first and foremost that is our job," said Marquez, who was installed to the police force's top post last week.
