MANILA, Philippines – Davao City Mayor Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte expressed disapproval of bullying and discriminating against gay people in his TV guesting aired Sunday night.

During his taped TV guesting on "Gandang Gabi Vice," the host Vice Ganda asked the mayor about his personality in school and if he was the bully type of student. Duterte replied that he is not and shared how he abhors the bullying of gay people.

“I’ve always hated oppression. Kaya kasi sa dormitory noon ayaw ko talaga 'yang mga bakla na niloloko,” Duterte said.

Duterte claimed he was the first to allow gay freedom in Davao and was the first to give statement defending the Ladlad party-list when they were denied registration by the Commission on Elections.

“I was the first to say to them, stop this hypocrisy. Kasi sila mayroon ding bakla sa opisina nila e. That I know,” Duterte said.

The mayor’s claims are backed by paper as Davao City was noted to pass an Anti-Discrimination ordinance, which bans discrimination against members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT), minority groups and disabled individuals in 2012.

“Sa Davao walang binabastos na bakla. Kasi ayaw ko ng oppression,” Duterte said.

Vice Ganda also asked him about his reaction if he finds out if his son Paolo has a gay partner. Duterte said there would be no problem about it.

“It’s more of the human dignity than anything else,” Duterte said.

“All human beings are created by God so kung rerespetuhin mo ang totoong babae, totoong lalaki, at ito namang isa kung medyo alanganin sa babae, lalaki, then he is also a creation of God. So kaya magrespetuhan tayo,” he added.

Asked for his views on same-sex marriage, Duterte said it’s good, adding “everyone deserves to be guaranteed happy.”

Duterte’s guesting on Gandang Gabi Vice drew more supporters from televiewers who found his outright answers entertaining. Hashtag #DuterteonGGV became the first trending topic in Philippines and second worldwide last night.
