Duterte retracts admission of death squad links

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte alleged he always use the word DDS which meant "Davao Development System."

MANILA, Philippines – Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said his statement on "DDS" links meant “Davao Development System” and not “Davao Death Squad.”

In a local show Gikan Para sa Masa last Monday, Duterte answered allegations that he is behind the Davao Death Squad, who are suspected to be responsible for summary killings of the criminals in Davao City.

During the interview, Duterte was asked for his reaction after being linked to the Davao Death Squad: "Ako, ako daw death squad? True, that's true," he responded.

Duterte also added that he will kill all people who are making the life of the Filipinos miserable.

However, Duterte on Wednesday clarified that the DDS he referred to was Davao Development System and not Davao Death Squad.

''I always use the word. Walang DDS dyan. That is Davao Development System. That is my guiding principle,'' Duterte claimed.

Duterte also denied his earlier statement of killing anyone alleging that when he was seated as a mayor, he never ordered to kill anyone.

'Walang akong sinabing 'pumatay kayo'. I never did it. I do not talk to the police even. I only talk to the police at nandyan ang media. And when I give money nakikita ninyo. You know I give P15,000 sa mga station commanders kasi kulang talaga ang budget ng police. That's for their operation and intelligence,'' Duterte claimed.

Meanwhile, former Commission on Human Rights chairperson earlier said that even if Duterte denies link with the Davao Death Squad, he will still remain accountable with the extrajudicial killings in 2012 due to his command responsibility.

"There is no direct evidence... but he is accountable. Pwede dalhin sa korte 'yan but he is accountable," Rosales said in a televised interview with ANC.
