Employees reporting for work to get double pay today

Mayen Jaymalin - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Double pay awaits employees who will work today.

The Department of Labor and Employment said “proper wage rules and core labor standards must be applied since Oct. 6 has been declared a regular holiday in observance of Eid’l Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice of the Muslims.”

Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said that for work done during the regular holiday, employees shall be paid 200 percent of their regular salary for that day for the first eight hours of work.

Those who will work for more than eight hours shall be paid an additional 30 percent of hourly rate on that day.

If the regular holiday falls on the worker’s rest day, the employee shall get an additional 30 percent of daily rate of 200 percent.

“For work done in excess of eight hours during a regular holiday that also falls on the rest day, the employee shall be paid an additional 30 percent of hourly rate,” Baldoz said.

Employees who will choose not to work shall still be paid 100 percent of salary for that day.

Baldoz reminded employers that proper observance of the pay rules during holiday strengthens decent work and encourages productivity. “Voluntary compliance of companies with this labor standard is good business practice.”
