(UPDATE) Filipino seaman in Togo cleared from Ebola virus: official

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - A Filipino seaman who was earlier suspected to have been infected with Ebola virus was cleared from the deadly virus, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said today.

DFA spokesman Charles Jose said the Philippine Embassy in Nigeria reported that the test on Filipino seaman yielded "negative result" for Ebola.

He said the Filipino national was instead diagnosed with flu.

The DFA earlier reported that the Filipino seaman in Togo was being monitored for the dreaded virus.

Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said in an interview at state-run radio station that the Department of Health (DOH) implements a very stringent testing process on people with suspected infection. Following arrival in the country, the DOH monitors them for 30 days.
